Once upon a time, there was a fisherman named Fred. He had a small boat and fished all day. His wife, Lily, was not happy. She wanted a big house and shiny things instead.
One day, Fred caught a fish that sparkled and shone. The fish said, ‘Release me, and I will grant you a wish!’, Fred thought hard, wishing for a cozy cottage for them both.
Lily was so surprised when Fred came home. ‘This house is nice, but I want more!’ she moaned. So Fred went back to the fish and asked for a grand mansion by the sea.
The fish granted the wish, bright and clean. But Lily saw the house and said, ‘This isn’t right! I want to be a queen!’
Fred sighed and returned to the fish once more. The fish granted Lily her wish, opening up a door. But still, she was not satisfied, always wanting more!
As days went by, Lily became a queen, wearing jewels that sparkled, and fine silk that gleamed. But with power came sadness and dreams that were lost.
Next, she wanted to rule the skies, commanding the sun and the moon with her cries. The fish granted this too, but Lily was not wise.
At last, she shouted, ‘I want it all! I am the greatest, bigger than all!’ But the fish was tired of her greed and watched her fall.
In one final wish, the fish made a change. It took all her wishes and made life strange. Fred found himself back in their tiny old shack.
Lily looked around, and her heart fell flat. They had each other, and that was a fact. She realized then, that more was not more; love was the key, not the jewels or the shore.
Fred held her close and said with a smile, ‘Let’s cherish our life, let’s make it worthwhile. We won’t need riches or things that we hoard. With love in our hearts, we’ll always be adored!’
