Once upon a time, there was a good ship sailing across the calm Atlantic. Most of the passengers on board were heading back home after a summer of fun and relaxation. They eagerly awaited their arrival at Fire Island Light.
On the side of the ship where the wind couldn't reach, a little group of American friends sat together. There was the Duchess, known as the Duchess of Washington Square, and Baby Van Rensselaer, the youngest of her family. They were discussing a charming English lord who was traveling to America.
Uncle Larry and Dear Jones, two friends, were playfully challenging each other to a bet on how far the ship would sail the next day. Their excitement filled the air, as they eagerly awaited the outcome.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, the sound of a fiddle drifted through the air. The passengers gathered on deck for a dance, their laughter mingling with the soft splash of the waves. The Duchess and Baby Van Rensselaer joined the joyful crowd, twirling and giggling until their cheeks were rosy. Uncle Larry and Dear Jones, caught up in the merriment, decided to postpone their bet and join in the fun instead.
When the moon climbed high in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the ocean, the ship's captain announced they would soon pass by Fire Island Light. With excitement buzzing, everyone rushed to the railing, eyes peeled for the first glimpse of the welcoming beacon. As the light finally came into view, a cheer went up, and the passengers felt a warmth in their hearts, knowing they would soon be home. The voyage, filled with friendship and laughter, had been an adventure to remember.
