Once in a castle, where the stories are told, lived a mouse named Despereaux, brave and bold. His ears were so big, he could hear the softest sound, even the gentle rustle of the leaves on the ground.
Despereaux loved tales of knights and fair maidens, dreaming of adventures far beyond the gardens. One day he heard a princess, trapped in a tower, with a voice as sweet as a blooming flower.
With courage in his heart and a sparkle in his eye, Despereaux decided, he must try. He dashed through the halls, past shadows and light, ready to save her, chasing away fright.
Up the stairs he climbed, his little feet raced, he thought of the princess whom he had embraced. He pictured her smiling, with sparkles that gleamed, Despereaux knew then, this was his dream!
At the top of the tower, he found her at last, Princess Pea sat, looking worried and vast. "Oh, little mouse!" she exclaimed with surprise, "You came to rescue me? You’re so small, yet so wise!
Together they escaped, laughing and cheer, Despereaux was brave, his heart filled with cheer. They ran through the castle, avoiding the guards, singing and dancing, they made it so far!
But soon they were caught, by a mean, wicked rat, who wanted the princess just for his own chat. "Let her go!" Despereaux shouted, puffing his chest. He faced the big rat, he would not rest!
"I may be small, but I have a big heart, I’ll save Princess Pea and we won't be apart!" With a brave little leap, he danced and he twirled, surprising the rat and saving the world.
With one final push, Despereaux showed his might, sending the rat running, away into the night. The princess was free, they cheered with delight, together they danced, under the moonlight.
Despereaux learned then, in the heart of it all, being brave can come from the smallest of all. Embrace who you are, let your true self be known, for love and forgiveness make the strongest home.
