One sunny afternoon, Max and his sister Lily were playing catch in their backyard. "Catch it, Lily!" Max shouted, throwing the ball high. But the ball landed outside the fence, and Lily squealed, "Oh no! I’ll get it!" As she climbed through the gap, a loud growl made her freeze. It was a big, scary dog with matted fur and sharp teeth. "Max! Help!" she cried, her voice shaking with fear.
Max jumped up, feeling brave. "Stay calm, Lily!" he said, walking slowly toward the dog. "Hey, boy, it’s okay. We just want the ball back!" The dog growled again but didn’t move. Max remembered the treats in his pocket. He took one out and said, "Look! We have something tasty!" He tossed it gently, and the dog sniffed it before munching happily. "See, Lily? Dogs can be nice!" Max smiled as the dog wagged its tail, and soon, they were all friends.
Lily slowly moved closer, her heart still thumping loudly. "You're right, Max!" she said, her voice now filled with wonder rather than fear. The dog's tail wagged even faster as it approached, and Lily bravely held out her hand. The dog sniffed her fingers and then licked them, making her giggle. "I think he just wants a friend," she said, looking at Max with a big smile.
The siblings decided to name the dog Scruffy because of his untidy fur. They spent the rest of the afternoon playing with their new friend, who turned out to be quite playful. Max threw the ball again, and Scruffy leapt after it, bringing it back every time with enthusiasm. "This guy would make a great teammate," Max laughed, noticing how well Scruffy fit into their games.
As the sun began to set, the children knew it was time to head inside. "Do you think Scruffy has a home?" Lily wondered aloud. Max shrugged, "I don't know, but we can ask around tomorrow." They hugged Scruffy goodbye and promised to bring more treats the next day. As they walked back to the house, they both felt proud and happy, realizing they had made a courageous and kind choice.
