Once upon a time, there was a prince. He wanted to find a true princess to be his bride. He searched far and wide, but it was not easy. Cotton blankets and soft pillows could not reveal who was royal.

One rainy night, there was a knock on the castle door. A girl stood there, soaked and cold. She said, 'I am a princess!' The queen was curious but also a bit sly.

The queen wanted to test the girl to see if she was really a princess. She placed a tiny pea under twenty thick mattresses, each one soft and fluffy.

The girl went to sleep on the high stack of mattresses. It was warm, cozy, and comfy, but something was not right. She tossed and turned all night long.

In the morning, the queen asked the girl how she had slept. The girl looked tired and said, 'Oh dear! I felt a little bump! I could not sleep at all!'

The prince and queen were surprised. Only a true princess could feel a tiny pea under all those soft layers.
